Farm To Smash - Point Loma

ree

Farm To Smash Burgers recently in Point Loma, in the strip mall between Rosecrans and Midway. There is another location in Escondido that has been there for a while. The Point Loma location is in a decent area although I imagine that strip mall can get packed during weekday lunch hours

What they are doing to try to separate themselves from other smashburger places is the focus on more fresh premium ingredients. According to their website, they use beef that's never frozen, no added hormones and ground fresh in-house everyday. They are also 100% seed oil free. And for the fries, they use 100% beef tallow. You know fat is flavor. They also sell the tallow as a skin care product. Strange

The menu is pretty small but there are a few customization options

There are only 4 specialty burgers (Original, Rodeo, Garlic Mushroom, Flaming Smash). Most of the time when people think of smashburgers, they think of just bread, patties, cheese, and maybe onions. The focus is on the meat. If you want to make modifications to the specialty burger, they suggest you just do a Build Your Own, where you choose # of patties, spread, type of cheese and toppings.

They offer standard fries in either regular or large size. You can also add fresh minced garlic. Although the menu did show it, they asked if I wanted any spread on my fries and I chose the gralic spread. They also offer the Loaded Fires, which is their version of the In 'N Out Animal Fries.

There are no fountain drinks. All drinks are in canned or bottled form. They are trying to limit use of plastics.

Large assortment of water (Liquid Death), Poppi sods cans, and bottled Coke. They also offer Agave lemonable and shakes. You can add house-made strawberry puree to the shake.

The establishment is a nice size although I can see it get packed pretty easily.. Mostly long tables and not too many of them. Could use a few small tables but looks like there is a booth for solo diners.

I opted for the Build Your Own Burger: 1 patty, original spread, white cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, raw onions and pickles.

I usually do two patties but since the whole meal would be a calorie bomb, I opted for one. Added some veggies to try to make it more healthy, yeah right. The patty had the right amount of drippiness without being too greasy. Cook medium, and a nice crust from the smash. Seasoned well but maybe a smidge too salty. The bun looked like a brioche. Seemed fresh although not sure if they bake it fresh in-house or source it daily from somewhere. The brioche was soft and had a nice squishy texture. The bun can make or break a burger, and I had no complaints with this one.

The beef tallow fries were nice. The potatoes were cut fresh. Not sure if they are double-fried (I'm guessing not). These fries were nice, although I would like them a tad crispier. The insides were nice and soft, and overwall the flavor was good, and I think the tallow elevate it a bit.

Overall, Farm to Smash is a welcome addition to the San Diego burger options. The staff were nice and friendly and the overall quality of the product was there. They seem to focus of the high quality of the ingredient and hopefully can flourish here. Give them a try.
